What is America?

Dear reader,

The above question could be answered in many different ways. For some it could be a place of sanctuary. For others, it could be home. However, America is more than a country. It is a collection of ideas made up by all the different people living in the nation. How  you view America all depends on where you come from and what you have experienced in your life.

For me, I think that America is seen as an influential and strong nation in the modern world.  I think America is seen that way because they have a lot of allies around the world and they are also in high positions in international organizations like the UN and NATO for example. America is also influential in the sense that it can signify a better place for some people who have been chased out of their own countries and want to find a better or more peaceful place to live.

Thinking of America as a symbol rather than a nation could be a beacon of hope for some people while for others it could be a place to start afresh. There are some disadvantages to thinking about America as a symbol. An example is that one could become too easygoing and forget the challenges of the real world as well as the reality of life.

America is a very diverse area of the world with many different views and aspects associated with it, and it all depends on where you come from in life. That will be a contributing factor to what you view America as.

  1. Kinya, I like how you immediately start off, in the title, by asking a question. It draws the reader in because they want an answer. And you do answer it, by stating many different sides of what America is to people. You often use words as “can” and “could.” Do you think you could omit those to produce a less hypothetical feeling? For example, in this sentence,”America is also influential in the sense that it can signify a better place for some people who have been chased out of their own countries and want to find a better or more peaceful place to live,” you could maybe change it to (this is just a suggestion!), “America is also influential in the sense that it signifies a better place to those…” But do keep your voice! One little correction: “organizations like the UN and NATO for example,” is redundant because the word “like” means “for example” in this sentence, so you have to “for examples” in the sentence. Otherwise, it was a good read!

  2. Kinya, I like how you throw it out there that America can mean many things to different people, depending on your background and what you’ve experienced. Then I like how you talk about how YOU view America. However, I do think that the first and last paragraphs are very redundant and not specific enough. Maybe you can give more examples on the different ways America means different things. Maybe for some people America is a place of persecution and maybe for others it serves as a symbol of freedom. Don’t just SAY there are different views on America–show us. Also, when you talk about your opinions on America, you don’t have to repeat “I think” so much. It makes your argument weak. But other than that, good job 🙂
